Begonia Hybrid ‘Funky Pink’

Native to the brightly shaded forest understory of Central and South America, Africa, and South East Asia, Begonias are grown for their lovely flowers and textured foliage. Most grow best in containers where their environment is more easily controlled. They need rich, fast draining soil, consistent, but light feeding, allowing the soil to almost dry out prior to rewatering. They are easily propagated from stem cuttings.

Begonia ‘Funky Pink’ has been hybridized to add more sun tolerance, hardiness of leaves, and profuse flowering. It is a compact, semi/trailing mounding plant (8-12” tall & wide) that will tolerate shade, partial sun, or morning sun with afternoon shade, and are fairly heat tolerant. ‘Funky Pink’ is perfect for hanging baskets or window boxes as the frilly, rosy-pink blossoms will cascade over the sides. They will also do well indoors if grown in a brightly lit room. They make handsome bedding plants as well, paired with Impatiens ‘Super Elfin White’ or Lobelia ‘Trailing Sapphire’. These stunning Begonias will flower from late spring through early fall. You can encourage re-bloom by pinching off old blossoms.

Begonias are named after the governor of the French colony in Haiti, Michel Begon, by the French Botany patron Charles Plumier. They are one of the 5 largest angiosperm Genus’, containing over 1,800 species. They are monoecious, meaning that each plant has separate male and female flowers.
