Monardella villosa ‘Russian River’ (Russian River Coyote Mint)

Monardella villosa ‘Russian River’ (Russian River Coyote Mint)

Native to California’s coastal ranges, as well as southern Oregon, Monardella villosa ‘Russian River’ is very aromatic, with a minty scent that is released when the foliage is brushed against. It has a bushy growth habit, growing 12-24 inches tall x 12-18 inches wide. In late spring through fall lilac-pink puffball-like flowers appear, attracting an array of butterflies and bees to the garden. This is an excellent choice for a pollinator-friendly landscape. Pruning back in late autumn helps to promote a fuller, more mounded appearance.

This California Native perennial is very drought tolerant once established, requiring little summer irrigation. If planted alongside other perennials that require moderate to heavy irrigation ‘Russian River’ will only thrive if planted in soil with excellent drainage. Because of its low water needs, this is a great perennial to plant under Oaks. Plant in sun or shade in coastal regions and part shade inland. The Sunset Climate Zones are 7-9, 14-24. We are currently growing Monardella villosa ‘Russian River’ in 1 gallon containers.
