Hypoestes phyllostachya ‘Splash Select’ (Polka Dot Plant)

Hypoestes phyllostachya ‘Splash Select’ (Polka Dot Plant)

Bred for its colorful foliage, Hypoestes phyllostachya ‘Splash Select’ adds fun pops of color to shady areas of the garden. (What’s not fun about a plant called Polka Dot Plant?) The intricate details of each leaf are something to behold, each one different from the next, speckled with spots and dots. This tender perennial is very easy to grow and only requires occasional pinching back to maintain its shape.

The ‘Splash Select’ series comes in three colors; White, Red, and Pink, and we have them all! These little beauties are not only perfect when mass planted in full to partial shade beds, mixed containers and hanging baskets, they are often grown as houseplants. The unique colors of the foliage add a delightful and unexpected change from the deep greens of most indoor plants. If grown indoors, provide bright indirect light.

Under favorable conditions, small lavender-colored flowers appear in the upper leaf joints. It’s best to pinch these off to promote more vegetative growth, however if allowed, these flowers will produce small capsules that when mature will burst open, expelling many small seeds. The ‘Splash Select’ series grows 10-18 inches tall x 12-14 inches wide. The Sunset Climate Zones are H1, H2, 23, 24. We are currently growing Hypoestes phyllostachya ‘Splash Select’ in 4” pots.
