Agastache rugosa ‘Little Adder’ (AKA Hummingbird Mint, Korean Mint, Anise Hyssop)

If you are interested in a late summer, early fall bloom in your garden, Agastache rugosa ‘Little Adder’ is the plant for you. This heat loving and dependable perennial will add profuse purple color to herb gardens, flower borders, and rock gardens. It tolerates full to part sun, and prefers average to well-drained soil. It is deer and rabbit resistant, and attracts a bounty of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. With deep green anise scented foliage, this plant will grow to be 22-24 inches wide, and twice as tall, showing off its loaded whorls of deep lavender-purple flower spikes. Trimming back the spent blooms will encourage additional bloom cycles. Although it is a heat lover, it will tolerate cold and wet winters, and rebound in the late spring-early summer. It thrives in Sunset Climate Zones 4-24, and does especially well in our Coastal California environments.

Native to East Asia (Korea, China, Japan, Russia, Taiwan, and Vietnam), this member of the Lamiaceae family of plants is used for culinary purposes in Korea to make food and broth for soup. It is one of the primary plants traditionally used in Chinese medicine and has antifungal, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties.
