Salvia greggii ‘Maraschino’ (Autumn Sage)

Salvia greggii ‘Maraschino’ is a hybrid of Salvia microphylla, native to Southern Arizona and Mexico, and Salvia greggii, native to Texas and Mexico. It has deep cherry-red flowers that bloom profusely from spring through fall. It is an evergreen shrub in mild winter areas, and a deciduous shrub in colder winter areas. At full growth ‘Maraschino’ will grow to be a 36” tall by 18” wide bush, so be sure you plant it in an area where it won’t be overtaken by the shade of surrounding plants, as it loves full sun, and will bloom best in that environment. It is drought resistant, but will tolerate moderate water, and minimal shade. Plant ‘Maraschino’ in well-drained soil. Prune back a couple of times a year to encourage new growth, and lightly feed with a nitrogen fertilizer to encourage more blooms. This plant makes a good low hedge, a beautiful cut flower, and is the perfect addition to the coastal garden.

In Latin, the name sage literally means to help, save and to heal. Sage, found in the family Lamiaceae, is a healing plant of great renown throughout history, and is also widely used for culinary purposes. Included in the family Lamiaceae are also Basil, Mint, Rosemary, Marjoram, Savory, Oregano, Hyssop, Thyme, and Lavender. Although healing qualities are most attributed to the culinary sage, Salvia officinalis, and Salvia greggii, ‘Maraschino’ is not grown for culinary purposes, ‘Maraschino’ has fragrant flowers that hummingbirds and butterflies flock to. It is deer and rabbit resistant, and grows well in Sunset Zones 8-24. We are currently growing Salvia greggii ‘Maraschino’ in 1 gallon containers.
