Digiplexis ‘Illumination Flame’ and ‘Illumination Raspberry’
If you’re looking for something really special for your garden, you’ve found it in Digiplexis ‘Illumination Flame’ and/or ‘Illumination Raspberry’. These plants are absolutely stunning!
Digiplexis ‘Illumination’ is a cross between Digitalis purpurea (Foxglove) and Isoplexis canariensis. It grows multiple flower spikes that grow 3 feet tall and are covered with fuchsia to deep-rose flowers with golden-apricot throats. The textured foliage is dark green with a spread to about 24 inches across. These eye-catching beauties bloom from spring through fall. Unlike most Digitalis flowers that have a short bloom time, Digiplexis blooms mimic their Isoplexis parentage, and remain open for several weeks.
These plants do best if planted in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil and are hardy to about 15 degrees Fahrenheit. They are a favorite of hummingbirds, butterflies and bees but thanks to their Digitalis parentage, are deer proof.
Digiplexis ‘Illumination Flame’ won the “Best New Plant Award” at the Royal Horticultural Chelsea Flower Show in 2012, and the Greenhouse Grower’s 2013 “Award of Excellence”. It also won the “People’s Choice Award” at the “New Varieties” showcase at the 2013 Farwest Trade Show in Portland, Oregon and was the Grand Prize winner of the 2014 ‘American Garden Award”.
