Verbena bonariensis ‘Buenos Aires’

Verbena bonariensis ‘Buenos Aires’

(Purple Top Vervain)

Of the 250 species contained in the genera Verbena, bonariensis definitely stands out with its tall, willowy 3-6 foot tall branches that provide enough open space within them to grow amongst other plants without squeezing them out. Beautiful clusters of lavender/pink flowers wave atop the long slender stems mid-summer through first frost. The deep green, lance-shaped leaves grow at the base of the plant, adding to the see-through quality of this surprisingly vigorous plant. A perennial in mild climates, it is happiest in Sunset Climate Zones 8-24 and it will re-seed and spread in sunny areas with well-drained, fertile soil.

Verbena bonariensis ‘Buenos Aires’ is very successful in warmer climates as it is native to Argentina, and has been known to grow wild in California and other similar climates. Once it has had a chance to get established in the landscape it needs little to no water, and is suitable for drought prone areas. It is a wonderful pollinator host, and will attract many beneficial bees and butterflies into your yard or garden, yet rarely has problems with pests. Plant with 12-20 inches between seedlings to give it a chance to spread to its 1.5-3 foot wide maturity. Because of its airy, see-through growth pattern, it is great as a foreground border plant or at the back of your border. It is lovely paired with contrasting yellow flowers as they will grow right amongst its foliage. Pair with other cottage garden plants such as Cosmos, Echinacea, Calendula ‘Pacific Beauty’, Asclepias ‘Silky Gold’, or Coreopsis ‘Early Sunrise’.
